The massively popular and award winning series, The Witcher, is getting a movie adaptation. The film will be based on the novels by Andrzek Sapkowsky, specifically the short stories of “The Wticher,” and “Lesser Evil.” The films will be developed by Studio Platige and Sean Daniels, of Mummy fame. Tomasz Baginsky, an Oscar nominee, will direct. The movie will be produced by Jarostaw Sawko and Piotr Sikora with Thania St. John (Grimm and Buffy the Vampire Slayer) heading up screenwriting duties. The film will serve as an introduction but is planned to be “the beginning of a series.” The movie is slated for an international release with a premiere in 2017. Now, in all honesty, I’ve never really been a massive fan of movie adaptations of video games. There’s some sort of ephemeral quality to games that never translate well into movies (comic book adaptations often suffer this as well); however, The Witcher seems to mix the many themes and motifs that make up some of today’s most popular shows, and this may well be a way to engage and further these mediums.
