Games For The Troops

In the past I had heard of events and fundraisers to send Video Game to troops overseas and thought it was a cool idea, but never something I had thought much about. None of my family are invovled in modern military in anyway, but I am always interested in a good cause and even more interested if that cause involves games. Opperation Supply Drop is an organization dedicated to suppling troops overseas with access to game consoles and video games. On November 10, 2012, Veteran’s Day, Opperation Supply Drop will host a a series of fundraiser events across America.

This Veteran’s Day Opperation Supply Drop presents “8-bit Salute to the troops”. These events will be open to the general gaming public and will be held in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York. I’m not going to lie, these events are no PAX or TGS, but they still sound pretty awesome. So what exactly are these events? Let’s take a closer look.

If you’re in Chicago in the Downers Grove area you can expect Live music, lots of game consoles, game challenges, a raffle, and a full bar. All procceds from this raffle will go towards Opperation Supply Drop. For more info. on the Chicago event please contact: odg6actual@offdutygamers.com .

Are you in Dallas? If so then you can expect the red carpet treatment, 20 game stations, geek-speed dating, online Quake tournaments, Nerf weapon battle, and a chance to play games with special guests. If you are into anime you will probably have heard of Mike McFarland who did voice work for DBZ, OnePiece, and Fullmetal Alchemist. If you want a chance to beat him at video games then head to Dallas. For more info. on that event you can contact: yvonna@CharismaPlus2.com .

For those of you on these west coast why not head over to Hollywood? This event is sponsered by Shifted2U Productions and will be held at the Los Angeles Film School. At this event you can play in a Medal of Honor: Warfighter tournament in the L.A. Film School game lab. At this event you can get a chance to play side by side with Medal of Honor: War fighter’s “Buck” and “Tick”, EA’s Military technical advisor, and Derrick Dockery of the Dallas Cowboys. For info. on that event contact: tonymoney@iamshifted.com .

Any New Yorkers reading? You guys can attend the party in Brooklyn. This event will have game stations, live music, and a raffle. Performers will include: MC Death Bear, Modern Shark, Junk Science, and DJ Cutman. For more info. on the New York event contact: rob.ritacco@gmail.com

Can’t make it to any of these events? You can still help! Paypal contributions can be sent to: donations@operationsupplydrop.org. If you want to help please do so, because according to the founder of Operation Supply Drop: “Our packages are an immeasurable morale booster for the soldiers; troops are accustomed to getting care packages from strangers full of baby wipes and socks. Our care packages are designed to blow their socks off.” . Last time a checked there aren’t many babies on the battle field, and gaming is one of the few low risk activities soldiers are permitted to do during combat.
